History & Mission

Sugartime Academy began with the intention to make the study of foreign languages central to education, which led to a departure from a Eurocentric approach to history and a commitment to anti-racism and anti-discrimination.

The name comes from the song "Sugartime," written by Charlie Phillips and Odis Echols, published in 1957,  and popularized by the Mcguire Sisters in 1958. "Sugartime" reminds us of carefree nights dancing to the radio station WXRB in Massachusetts.

Social Justice

We inspect what we read, watch, and experience through a social justice lens even when it makes us uncomfortable, in order to change the present and the future for the better. Please visit the Facebook page of our partner, Humanity from Day One:  https://www.facebook.com/HumanityFromDayOne/

Languages

We incorporate the study of foreign languages into all subjects and encourage varied, immersive experiences in person and through literature, film, television, apps, and online platforms.

Music

Besides having value in their own right, music lessons and practice encourage commitment, perseverance, and problem-solving. We see dance, instruments, singing, and poetry as interconnected facets of musical training.
